Church History

In early 1993, when the Moovarasampet Church, in the outskirts of Chennai tried for getting Pastorate status from the Diocese of Madras, the then Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr.Azariah advised them to start new churches in Madipakkam and Keelkatalai, the nearby places under their control so that they will get required congregational strength to get the Pastorate Status. At that time six families in Madipakkam area came forward to start a Church in this area and so they developed a thatched shed in the upstairs of Mr. Paulkanthan’s house (one among the six families.)
On April 25th 1993, the first Divine Service was conducted there in the thatched shed and that was a Holy Eucharist. At that time it was suggested to name the Church as ‘St. Mark’s Church’ since the day being St. Mark’s Day.
When the strength of the congregation increased in 1995, they decided to purchase a land for the Church and on 9th April the same year a 5 ½ ground ( 33 cents ) of land was purchased at the present location.
Then a semi permanent shed with thatched roof ( the present Church ) was constructed in 1997 and the new Church was dedicated on 8th Feb 1997 by the then Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Azariah. Subsequently the thatched roof was replaced with a strong asbestos roof.
In 1999, when the nearby Adambakkam Church tried to get Pastorate status, Madipakkam was considered along with them and a new Pastorate called ‘Adambakkam − Madipakkam Pastorate’ was formed in April 1997.
The first Confirmation Service was conducted at the Church on 19th September 2006 by then Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. V. Devasahayam and on that day 16 members of the Church received Confirmation.
On 25th Jan 2007 an additional 1 ½ ground of land adjacent to the Church was purchased.
Due to the strenuous effort taken by Rev. D. Mohanraj, the then Presbyter-in-charge, ‘Unit Status’ was awarded to the Church from the first of April 2007.
Our Lord is continuously blessing the church abundantly right from the inception and now the Church has 190 families. The various fellowships like, men fellowship, women fellowship, youth fellowship, Sunday class and choir with a regular children choir are growing day by day by the strength of the Lord and by His Glory. The Church is doing outreach programs like free Medical Camps and visiting orphanages and homes frequently and supporting them.
On all Sundays Divine Service is conducted at 8.30 a.m. and on 2nd & 4th Sundays, they are Holy Eucharist and before all the services the Church youth conduct a ‘Praise and Worship’ they sing songs of praise from 8.15 a.m. Since the strength of the congregation has now increased the small semi permanent shed is not able to accommodate all the members, there is a dare necessity to construct a big Church and it is decided to build a ‘Stilt Plus’ so that we can have a large fully covered car parking underneath the Church.
We are sure that the Lord’s abundant blessing will guide the congregation and the Advisory Committee members in the construction of the new Church for His Glory.
